In an article published by Marijuana Moment, author Kyle Jaeger, explains the methods the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) has implemented in the past and what is planned for the future in regards to imported Hemp plants and seeds from outside countries.
Unlike other countries, the USDA allows for hemp seeds and plants to be imported from Canada, however only if accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate from Canada’s plant protection organization. This method has been kept in order due to the fact that without the certificate there is no way of knowing whether the plant pests reside in the hemp.
Recently the USDA has taken a different approach for this method since the legislation was signed last December. They are now accepting applicants for intellectual property protections for seed-propagated hemp. As of August, the USDA claimed that any farmers still operating under the 2014 Farm Bill are eligible for federal crop insurance for the 2020 planting season.
USDA Deputy Secretary, Stephen Censky, said this past Monday that the department’s intention is to release its interim final rule on hemp within the next few weeks. Read more.
